Imagine walking down a quiet morning street, only to see a man glued to a lamppost with duct tape. He has a handkerchief over his mouth and cartoonist-style whiskers drawn on his face. The man also has the word ‘thief’ written on his forehead. There is also a motorcycle that is thought to have been stolen. Whilst it sounds like it would fit into a dark comedy, this strange situation has happened in Lagos de Moreno, Mexico.

The mysterious man behind this has gained an unusual nickname.

It is interesting because we do not know who this man is. This has also caused more of a buzz in the public. This has also caused Mexican police to investigate the people responsible.

The First Appearance of the Mexican Batman

On June 12-13, 2026, a man was found duct-taped to a lamppost in Lagos de Moreno, a municipality in the west of Mexico in the state of Jalisco. It was reported that the man had been assaulted and had the word ‘rata’ (rat) written on his forehead. There was also a motorcycle nearby that had been reported stolen.

It seemed like an isolated incident. But then this started happening again!

On June 17, two young men were found tied to another lamp post with their mouths covered. There was also a motorcycle nearby. This started happening more in the following few days. Within 10 days, at least 5 people had been found tied up.

The strange drawings on their faces made them more identifiable. Some had moustaches drawn on with marker pens and cat-like whiskers. Some had signs written on them saying they had stolen motorcycles. Some had handwritten warning signs nearby.

The Detail That Made the Story Even Stranger

An interesting detail is how the motorcycles were placed intentionally.

This makes it seem like the people responsible wanted to show off that they had found the people they suspected had stolen their motorcycles. Instead of secretly returning the motorcycles to the authorities, they were showing off.

Mexican news reported that in three of the incidents, they had found motorcycles. The authorities confirmed that at least some of them had been reported stolen. This makes the story more complex. Although we know there was actual motorcycle theft, we cannot be sure that everyone tied up was guilty.

The Police Were Investigating The Wrong People

Here is where it gets interesting!

Whilst the internet was celebrating the mysterious crime-fighter, the authorities were looking into who tied up and injured the men.

The men tied up were seen as assault victims. They were untied and taken to receive medical attention.

The authorities looked into CCTV footage and vehicles that may have been linked. However, investigators could not confirm it was one person.

Interesting details were later reported.

In early July, the Jalisco prosecutor Salvador González de los Santos had questioned whether there was really just one Batman. Investigators believed there may be at least two people involved. As they had tied up multiple people, they may need more than one person. They are also looking into whether there is an organised group.

So the famous Mexican Batman may not actually be one mysterious superhero!

Why Did Some Locals Support the Vigilante?

We need to look past the strange images.

Lagos de Moreno has had serious issues with crime. In August 2023, 5 young men went missing, causing the town to be in the news. This caused people to be concerned about organised crime.

This can cause people to become frustrated with crime in the area. If there have been multiple reports of motorcycle theft.

Some people on social media saw the mystery man as someone who was taking action. However, some saw it as embarrassing people who were accused of stealing motorcycles.

However, it can be easy to accuse someone of theft. Tying someone up, assaulting them or putting a brand on them can cause serious issues.

The Real Mystery Of The Mexican Batman

The most overlooked detail of this story is that the authorities were trying to find out if there was any link between the incidents and why they had happened.

There is a big difference between finding stolen items and taking someone’s freedom away illegally.

Whilst we do not know exactly who did this or how many people were behind it, the nickname Batman has made this story entertaining on the internet. However, there were reports of assaults and people being injured. There are still unresolved criminal investigations.

Whether they believed they were helping their neighbourhood or had another reason for doing this, one thing is clear. Lagos de Moreno now has a mysterious crime story, and we do not know how it will end!
