Imagine floating thousands of feet up in the air with vibrant balloons all around you, but then realising you are getting blown away by the wind and heading towards an endless ocean. With no controls, no motor and no easy way to change direction.
This terrifying scenario became a reality for Adelir Antônio de Carli in 2008. The Brazilian Catholic Priest had set out on a unique fundraising mission which became a tragic event. Whilst his story is often remembered as a strange balloon accident, there is more to the story. It involved a mix of charitable intentions, unpredictable weather, navigation issues and difficulties surviving.
A Charitable Mission Gone Wrong
On the 20th April 2008, Father Adelir de Carli got ready for an incredible trip in Paranaguá, a port city in southern Brazil.
The 41-year-old Priest wanted to raise some money for a religious pit stop for truck drivers. Rather than doing a traditional fundraising event, he decided to try and break a record by flying using around 1000 helium filled party balloons.
The Priest planned to fly to Dourados, around 750km (466 miles) away and hoped to stay airborne for around 20 hours, breaking current balloon flight records.

He put on his safety gear, helmet and parachute and climbed into his specially designed chair connected to hundreds of vibrant balloons. He was lifted into the air as his massive balloon arrangement took off.
Unpredictable Weather
Despite having skydiving and survival training experience, de Carli relied heavily on the weather.
Shortly after take-off, he was blown off course by unexpected winds and headed towards the Atlantic Ocean rather than inland to Dourados.
It was reported he flew up to around 6000m (19,700ft) before descending.
At such a height, there can be many issues relating to cold temperatures, low oxygen levels and unpredictable wind patterns. A cluster of normal helium balloons has very little control over direction.
Once he was blown out to sea, his chances of landing where he wanted were looking slim.
Navigation Issues
One of the most disturbing parts was that de Carli had navigation tools to help rescuers find him. This included a GPS.
However, during his last communications, he asked for help with the GPS.
This may seem like a small issue, but it can cause huge problems.
Whilst a GPS can tell you where someone is, the rescuers need the GPS to give them coordinates they can use to search for them.
De Carli was reported to have flown out to around 50km out to sea and then lost contact. Around 8 hours after take-off, he was reported missing.
This shows how whilst having survival equipment can be useful in outdoor scenarios, it does not always mean you will be able to use it under pressure.
Why His Survival Equipment Wasn’t Enough
De Carli had made sure he had some survival equipment. This included a floating chair, safety gear, a parachute, water and food.
This gave hope to the rescuers that he might survive if he landed in the sea.
However, surviving in an emergency at sea can be tricky. The currents can blow you off course; it can be difficult to see individuals due to the waves, and being in the sea for long periods of time can cause life-threatening situations.
Unfortunately, we do not know exactly what happened to cause de Carli’s death. Therefore, it would be misleading to say any specific survival issue caused his death.
Search For The Missing Priest
Rescuers searched the coastal waters using boats, planes and helicopters. They found some balloon pieces and clusters but could not find the missing Priest.
Family and supporters hoped he may have landed on land or survived at sea.
In early July, a body was found floating near the southeast coast of Brazil by workers on a tugboat.

DNA tests confirmed the body was Father Adelir de Carli. This was announced by authorities on the 29th- 30th of July, around 3 months after he went missing.
A Sad Lesson To Learn
What makes this story so sad is that it was originally for a good cause. De Carli was trying to gain attention and money for those who spend most of their lives working on the roads in Brazil. However, it makes us think about how to balance raising money through adventurous methods with keeping yourself safe.
In his earlier balloon flights, he crossed the border from Chile to Argentina without meaning to. That shows how easily you can lose control while flying in the balloon.
To put this in perspective, we must respect nature and our equipment before embarking on such endeavours. The reality is that we can only dream as far as we can plan, and there is always a boundary that should not be crossed.
Father Carli wanted to do something that had a real impact, but that last journey of his demonstrated to us how even dreams can become dangerous if not managed.
