Canneto di Caronia had always been quiet. For years, it seemed as if nothing of great interest would ever occur there. This small coastal village, nestled between the Tyrrhenian Sea and Sicily’s heartland, would soon enough see an event transpire in one of its homes on the eve of Christmas in 2003 that made it renowned as the setting of one of Italy’s most infamous mysteries.
A television reportedly exploded.
Had this been the cause of the events that transpired shortly after, Canneto di Caronia would not have garnered any notable infamy. However, shortly following this alleged incident, other homes would see fires and electrical failures occur. Even washing machines, cookers, computers, fuse boxes and other household appliances were affected by what followed: more curiously still were the reports that seemingly had no obvious link to a live electrical supply. Water pipes were reported to have been damaged, and an unplugged electrical cable was even said to be seen to catch fire.
The obvious suspect was electricity, So the electricity supply was cut.
But, the fires did not stop immediately.
This, indeed, made this a unique set of circumstances. While many believed that a natural phenomenon that had nothing to do with normal electricity had caused the trouble, engineers worked on the region and the established systems.

At the same time, researchers and various government departments worked on the matter. The Italian Senate eventually confirmed that the team had worked step by step to eliminate the possibility of any natural causes as well as other standard forms of technology: they mentioned the local electricity network, the rail facilities and the telecommunications sites.
Next came perhaps one of the most strange chapters in Canneto’s history: that of the evacuation.
The residents of the area were evacuated as part of an effort to understand what had happened. The village was abandoned for only a short period of time, as investigators and workers arrived to check and inspect the area’s wiring. The latter also had another purpose: to look for a definite cause for the strange bursts of electricity that seemed to occur with no reason at all.
However, this story gets twisted on the internet.
The fires did not continue for a full ten years in total.
The first period of them ran from roughly 2003-2004, continuing onwards over the next few years. Eventually, the phenomenon subsided. In 2014, however, stories began circulating about strange fires once more. These had been approximately ten years after the first wave. They affected homes, cars and various other domestic appliances within homes. On the other hand, people once more raised some of their old theories. Some referred to electromagnetic causes, while others suggested UFOs and a number of other, often more outlandish possibilities.
The later wave, however, had one crucial difference from the earlier mystery: that of surveillance footage.
The Italians had installed hidden cameras following the later incidents, and police eventually accused Giuseppe Pezzino of setting fires. They further accused his father, Antonino, as being involved. In 2015, Giuseppe was arrested, and authorities stated that the motive for his alleged actions had been obtaining financial support due to the supposed mysterious occurrences.
However, the story is never finished. One particular piece of information is often brushed aside in later retellings of the mystery. In 2022, a court in Patti convicted father and son in first instance for the 2014 incidents. Giuseppe was sentenced to six years in prison, and his father received a sentence of one year and six months. The charges included arson, fire-caused property damage and aggravated fraud.
Canneto, sadly, has a number of mysteries that simply remain unresolved.
The 2014 convictions apply to the later wave of fires: they did not include any of the strange events that had occurred during the first period of unexplained conflagrations. A separate, difficult investigation eventually finished up in 2008 when prosecutors closed the file after the intervention of external consultants who claimed that the fires had been caused deliberately by residents.

Most of Canneto’s great questions are buried underneath reams of frightening headlines.
However, if the later wave of fires did indeed involve residents setting fire to their properties, what else had occurred during the first wave? This is rarely discussed.
Canneto’s story is, therefore, not merely a tale about a haunted village or of spontaneous combusting electricity. It is also a story of how one bizarre event became conflated with one later criminal investigation to create a single mystery that is much simpler than the true history behind it. The village continues to burn, despite the mystery being laid to rest.
